A system can be technically running and still leave a gap somewhere, whether that is an unsealed crack, an unsealed sump lid, or a suction point that is not covering the whole foundation, so the only way to know your indoor air actually improved is to test it.

When to test after installation

We recommend waiting at least twenty-four hours after the system is turned on before testing, so the house has time to reach a stable state. Testing immediately can catch the system mid-adjustment and give a reading that does not reflect normal operation.

What a good result looks like

A well-designed sub-slab depressurization system typically reduces indoor radon by 80 to 99 percent. If your post-mitigation test comes back well under the EPA action level of 4 pCi/L, that is confirmation the system is doing its job. If it does not, we go back and find what is undercutting the vacuum.

Ongoing testing after the first confirmation

Radon mitigation professionals generally recommend re-testing every two years or so, since fans, seals and pipe connections can degrade slowly over time. A continuous monitor is another option if you would rather have an ongoing read instead of a periodic one.
